The inception of Old Army Gentlemen’s Society began in April 1995 when a group of ten student leaders were eating lunch and discussing their desires to bring a new men’s organization to A&M’s campus. They each saw a desperate need for a society that brought together some of the brightest and most dedicated leaders on campus in an environment that allowed them to share their ideas and most importantly, build bonds with each other that would benefit themselves and their beloved university. There were other organizations on campus at the time, but none seemed to fit the uniqueness that is possessed by Ol’ AGS to this day.The following fall semester these student leaders got back together and laid the groundwork for OL’ AGS. The first Cans for a Cause charity event was thrown and was a huge success, formally marking the beginning of Ol’ AGS.
When Ol’ Ags was founded, several focal points were laid down. Most importantly, the idea was that they were Aggies first. They wanted to approach everything they did with this mindset, and we as an organization keep this in mind in everything we do. Next, with so many of the members being busy with other organizations around campus, they rarely had social time with friends – which is what this organization was intended to provide. The third focus was to promote service. These men wanted to give back to the Bryan/College Station community through service and philanthropy. Lastly, they felt the organization should be compiled of the “best of the best” student leaders at Texas A&M.Today, OL’AGS is still upholding the vision of our founders. With so many leaders coming from different backgrounds, OL’ AGS has prospered and grown year after year. The organization has grown from about 30 members its inaugural year to anywhere between 70 to 80 members every academic year. Over the years our membership has included just about every major leadership position on campus. In addition to our current membership, we have a supportive alumni group that is close to 210 men. Not surprisingly, former Ol’ Ags have gone on to do a variety of outstanding things in the military, education, business and public service sectors(to name a few).
The four pillars that make OL’ AGS one of the most respectable and successful groups on campus are instilled in every member’s and alumi’s mind:
We are a Leadership, Service, and Social organization committed to putting Texas A&M University first.
Our members are all proud Aggies and therefore, above all else, “Aggies First”. Along with this, every one of our members have been selected because they have proven themselves to be a leader in one area or another, as well as men of character, and are therefore held to a higher standard. Our organization is guided by FIVE CORE VALUES, and each member is expected to live their life in a way that both honors these values and makes this organization proud.
We are leaders who come together to learn from each other , serve our campus and community, and make the most out of our time while here at our beloved university. It is with this mindset that men are selected each year to carry on the proud traditions of Texas A&M and Ol’ Ags.
